Historic Architecture

Split Cathedral

Building Inspiration A:

The Villa Zorayada
1883
A Grand Gilded Age Museum attraction in St. Augustine, Florida. Built in Moorish Revival Architecture in 1883 by Franklin Smith.

Building Inspiration B:

St Augustine Lightner Museum
1887
Completed in 1888, the magnificent Spanish Renaissance Revival building was designed by the prominent architecture firm of Carrère and Hastings.

While creating this paper sculpture, I wanted to create something colorful, chaotic, and askew. I wanted it to convey movement and emphasis with the pop of color used sparingly.

Prolonged Palace
Paper and glue

Building Inspiration A:

Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church
1890
Henry Flagler built the church for his daughter, Jennie Louise Flagler, who died in 1889. He chose Carrère and Hastings, the same architects who built the Ponce de Leon Hotel. Its design is based on the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice, Italy.

Building Inspiration B:

St. Benedict The Moore Catholic Church
1911
Named for the patron saint of African-Americans, St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church was built and dedicated in 1911. This church serves the historic Lincolnville district.

During the creation of this paper sculpture, I realized that sharp angles and a clean, white design felt fitting for the vibe I was going for. It illustrated the balance I felt a church often has.
